How to create a new Test or Measurement

PsyTrace lets you create your own measurements and track the results of standardized tests. You can also create self-administered interviews or tests.

Respect copyright laws.

PsyTrace accepts any and all questions you give it, and it cannot tell whether a test is copyrighted. Do not use PsyTrace to administer copyrighted tests to your clients unless you have proper permission from the copyright holder.

The steps to create a new test, to track results from clients, are below.

  1. Open the new test screen

Select the Tests/Measurements menu (in the System or Admin menu) and choose Create New Test/Measurement.

  2. Name the test

Enter the name of the test or measurement, for example “Academic Performance”, and any other pertinent information such as the author and copyright.

  3. Define the scales

Enter the names of the Scales that are part of the test, the Low and High Value for each scale, and the computational formula for the scale. An example of how to write the formula is shown on the screen.

For example, the scale names might be “Reading, Writing, Math, and Science”, with low and high values of 0 and 100.

Note. Keep the low and high values the same for all scales if you want to plot all the scales on the same graph in the future.

Note. Computational formulas can contain only arithmetic operations, and all calculations proceed from left to right. For example, the formula #1 + #3 - #5 computes the scale score by adding the score of the answer to the first question to the score of the answer to the third question, then subtracting the score of the answer to the fifth question.

  4. File the definition

File the definition of the new measure.

  5. Add the introduction and questions Self-administered tests only

If clients will take the test themselves, you also need to enter the Introduction and the questions.

    • Click the Introduction button and enter the text the client sees when the test starts, for example “You will now be asked a few questions about your alcohol use...”
    • Click Questions and enter every question. For each one, enter the question description, the question number, and the question choices. Click File after each question.

To see how questions are entered, watch the movie clip provided with PsyTrace, in the ShowMe folder of the CD.

  6. Enter data into the new measure

Use the Testing option of the Clinician menu, or start the SelfTest.Exe program, where the client answers the test or interview in self-administered form.
